EIGHTEENTH CENTURY LITERATURE
This course is a survey of the poetry and prose produced in England between 1663, shortly after the Restoration, and 1794, shortly before the advent of Romanticism. The selection of works intends to highlight the importance of satire and the mock form and the transition from a clearly formalized set of poetic principles to the hybridity of style and form provided by the apparition of the novel.

4) Jonathan Swift and the Satire: Baucis and Philemon, Poems,(August 28th); A Modest Proposal. (September 4th).
5) Travel Literature, Satire and Realism: Swift, Gulliver's Travels (September 11th); Daniel Defoe, Robinson Crusoe (September 18th).
6) The Urban Scene: High Life, Low Life, Crime and Exchange (September 18th), John Gay, Beggar's Opera (October 2nd); Daniel Defoe, Moll Flanders (October 2nd).
7) Epistolary Novel: Samuel Richardson, Pamela; Eliza Haywood, Anti-Pamela; Henry Fielding, Shamela (October 16th); Richardson, Clarissa (October 23rd).
8) The Cervantic Humour: Henry Fielding, Tom Jones (October 30th); Charlotte Lennox, The Female Quixote (November 6th); Laurence Sterne, The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman (November 13th).
9) Sense and Sensibility: Boswell, Gibbon, Burke, Gray, Burns.(November 20th)
